New Earth Architecture are Michael Orchard and Sandy Adams. Both partners graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree from UCT and are registered with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession. (SACAP reg.no.s 6229 and 7359)
Michael recently completed a course in “community building through sustainable design” with the Sustainability Institute in Stellenbosch. Sandy completed a Masters degree at UCT in the study of sustainable settlements (SEARCH Mphil) in 2004. Sandy is currently a member of the Scarborough Architectural Advisory Committee and the Vipassana Master Plan committee. Michael is a member of the Hemp Technology Group, and together Sandy and Michael are the Scarborough representatives of the Kommetjie South Transitional Town movement.
Sandy worked in a range of Architectural firms from 1995-2000 on a variety of domestic and commercial projects, both in Cape Town and London. She practiced independently in Cape Town from 2000-2004 during which time she lectured in design studios and completed her Masters degree at UCT. She was a partner in Cooke, Le Fevre and Adams from 2005-2008 specialising in low income sustainable settlement design, and was a founding member of New Earth Architecture in 2008.
After graduating in 1991 Michael travelled in India, Nepal, Tibet and China for two years during which time he worked on additions to and restoration of Rumtek Tibetan Monastery in Sikkim, North India. Michael was inspired by the sacred buildings of Tibet; constructed from natural materials and possessing qualities often lacking in modern buildings. Upon return to South Africa Michael worked at in the in-house design studio at Spier and practiced independently before entering into the Stander-Orchard Architects partnership from 2004-2008, designing private residences, wineries and commercial buildings.
